Hi folks,
been I while since I've posted anything here now, but I'd thought you'd like to see one of my long term projects. As I turned 35 last August, I persuaded my wife it was a good time to realise an old-time dream of mine, getting a big R/C cat from Tamiya - the Tiger I in 1/16 scale. She agreed, and I ended up ordering mine from backyardarmor.com. It arrived safely and here's what you may look like if you get one of these:
Now, spending that kind of money on such a big kit left me wanting to add as much detail as possible. I was warned from others owning the same kit, that mixing R/C with super-detailing, was frustration waiting to happen, but the way I see it, the engine noises, the movement etc will only add to the full experience of such a big model. At any rate I do not plan to drive it out in the wild anyway.
First out on my list of aftermarket items, is the big kit from Aber. 17 frets of etch, towing cables, spare track holders, 52 page instructions and more, this kit is a beauty! And ever so slightly intimidating...

This being the R/C kit, there's a couple of shortcomings in the detailing department. The underside of the tank is void of detail, and will remain so. Also, the instructions call for leaving the hull deck and turret root removable for access for maintenance, but I will organize my work thus that when the time is right, the R/C-equipment will be mounted inside the tank to stay there. If it breaks it breaks. That only means I no longer will be able to drive it. Batteries and receiver shall be recoverable anyway.
Going up in scale from 1/35 to 1/16 not only increase the size of the model by a substantial factor, it also increase cost of aftermarket items.
Amongst the stuff I've aquired is scale antenna, aluminium barrel, muzzle brake, decal sheet and towing shackles:
reduction gears to get scale speed (the kit is like having a scale top speed of 70 km/h):
Figures (S&T productions):
And I've just ordered a set of M1 bolts and butterfly nuts as well as a bucket. And resin tracks, for display purposes (hence it won't be fully scale-like when driving, but I have yet to find metal tracks without cast pin marks).
The project is well underway, but more later as all this was written during my lunch break at work
