This is a long-term project I have had going on for more than a year now. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I bought the photo etch for this kit first, thinking it would fit the Tristar Pz I/A I bought at the same time. Little did I know about the development of the Panzer I series at that time. Now, much later and with the Panzer Tracts on my shelf, I know better
Anyways, since I had spent good money on the ABER etch, I decided to get the Alan kit and get started.
The Pz I/F is a cool looking tank, but I'd wish the kit had been better. Not that it is terrible, but it does have its challenging points. I'll discuss these further down this thread. (This post is but the first in a series, to avoid a very looong single post.)
From the start I decided to get the Modelkasten tracks for this thing, and soon discovered that they differed quite a bit from the kit tracks.
Note in particular, the different spacing of the guide horn holes.
The Modelkasten tracks look correct compared to images in Panzer Tracts 1-2, and the MK kit includes a spacer for the drive sprocket:
The alignment of pin holes and stuff on the hull, leaves something to be desired as well. In the below picture, I have put an image of the left and right side together, and observe the location of the pin hole in the rectangular "disks". They should have been in the same spot, since the shock absorber shall be centered on that disk. I decided to remove those disks completely, as they are also misplaced.
The shock absorber ends themselves, also had to be trimmed down a bit.
Comping up next, the engine grilles...
