These are some photos I took last summer at the Patton Museum - thought you might find them interesting or useful.

Too bad they let it rot away ...

This one is actually kept indoors. It would be nice to see it remain unrestored. I don't think the restored German AFV's in the collection are all that authentically painted. . . The best part is always getting a look at the tracks and suspension. Funny, too that, the Tiger II and Panther II in the collection (like most of the vehicles) have Kitty Litter under them to absorb oil leaks.

Yes and if we have any more "experts" doing a butches job on these last few we will never know they are full of sh.......

I like the idea of it being all roughed up but that muzzle brake looks like it's had the be-jesus hit out of it with a 16lb sledge hammer!!

Nifty thing too is some insight into what went under the paint.

Is it possible that this one had a waffle-pattern zimmerit job?

This tank was actually pulled out of a bog in the Ukraine 64 years after it was lost. The way it looks now, is the way it was lost then. It still has the original zimmerit on it. I watched the video of them pulling it out at the Patton Museum and it was awesome!

I doubt there was that much red primer showing when it was lost. Its very possible that alot of the paint you see chipped off happened when they were spraying the vehicle with the high power hoses cleaning all the muck off of it. I find interesting the thinness of the zimmerit. It is not applied very heavily.

IIRC towards the end of the war before zimmerit was completely phased out, it was applied in thinner and thinner layers, due to the change of tactics of the Russians. Russians stoped using magnetic AT mines when they took the initiative, so zimm became pointless to use.

Hi all,

Thanks for sharing this pictures.
Let’s see what we have here. It’s definitive a StuG produced at Alkett.
It was a commanding vehicle because on the right rear side of the fighting compartment it show’s a armoured antenna base.
Acceptance at Heereswaffenamt must be in all probability March 1944.
