HI Guys,
After a long time not building too much, and not really contributing to the site, I thought it time to get back into it..
I guess someone had to be first at having a tilt at completing one of these leviathans!
Santa was good to me this year, brought me the new Trumpeter 1/16th scale King Tiger.. To say this kit is enormous doesnt do it justice..
Here's the box, its the large thing on the desk in the left of frame.
You can see how it dwarfs everything else in the room.. look closely and you can see a 1/35 scale M1A1 Abrams there on the desk.. compare it to the size of the box and you will appreciate the scale of the thing!
Quick view inside the box. The packaging on this kit is first rate, everything separated into sections for easy access. Well done Trumpeter.
Im not going to take shots of the sprues and instructions like some build logs here, this is just TOO big, and there are too many things to photograph.
Here's step one - wheels. The monster road wheels trap poly caps in the traditional manner, but the wheels themselves are made up of 2 parts each (not unlike the new Tamiya Jagdtiger). I've yet to sand the mold lines off - tomorrow night maybe. The idler and sprockets are pewter (I think) and went together really well. Amongst the sewing circle here in Melbourne there was some concern that the idlers may not go together well - a quick pass with the file on the inner mating surfaces and everything fit together just perfectly - a total of 10 seconds per idler.
Now, as to what vehicle to do - I think I want it to be a ss501 vehicle in the Ardennes - not sure as yet as to which one - i've always had a thing for '222'. Feel free to call out any suggestions.
Also, i'm still undecided as to how mental to go on this build - straight OOTB, or fully detailed, or somewhere in the middle. Time will tell I guess
Sorry for the hasty images, there isnt enough room on my desk for my 'photobooth' to be set up!
Sam
